In 1959, Mary and her husband, Burk Him Chung, founded Superior Trading Company in San Francisco’s Chinatown. As pioneers in the American herbal medicine industry, they were the first Chinese business to travel to Wisconsin to source and promote the cultivation of American ginseng. Their dedication to offering authentic, high-quality ginseng earned them a strong reputation across the industry. In the late 1970s, with the opening of U.S.-China trade, the Chungs were ahead of their time, introducing many popular Chinese herbs and patent medicines to the U.S. market. While growing a successful business, Mary and Burk remained true to their values — operating with integrity, treating all customers with respect, and raising their family with love and diligence. Through Superior Trading Company, they built lasting trust within the community by offering fair prices and genuine care. Beyond their business, the Chungs were committed to giving back. Their generosity supported countless charitable and educational initiatives in Chinatown, including longtime support of Chinese Hospital, St. Mary’s Chinese Language School, and St. Mary’s Chinese Day School. Their philanthropy enriched the lives of many and helped strengthen the community they called home. Now reunited with her beloved husband Burk, Mary leaves behind a legacy of compassion, resilience, and service. Their remarkable contributions to both business and community will never be forgotten. The values they lived by — honesty, generosity, and dedication — will continue to inspire all who knew them.
